Wordfull Wednesday - My Worst Fear

I've decided to write about guns.  I mean, why not?  I love them and the thought of them being outlawed is fearful to me.  My dad gave me my first gun when I was twelve - a little .22 with a nylon stock so it was light and easy to shoot.  It still is my favorite gun.  My brothers could borrow it, but only if they didn't shoot anything alive.  It was a peaceful gun only made for shooting cans and targets.

One of my favorite dates is to go shooting with Mr. Bechtel.  He's a pretty good shot, but I never admit defeat - even if it might be justified!  In fact, I think it's time for another friendly competition.
The places around our home where you can safely go shooting are diminishing as more people move to the area.  But in the west it is a time honored tradition to go shooting as a family.  Many families, after a nice dinner on Thanksgiving, or on New Years day when there are lots of glass bottles, will head for their favorite shooting spot as a family and have a great time target shooting.  And no, all these people are not bitter and clinging to their guns and their religion, they're just good people who are independent and are carrying on a family and cultural tradition.
Mr. Bechtel's cousin came to visit last spring, and seeing how close our neighbor was, said, "Oh, man, that's terrible, you can't even shoot from your property can you?"
These ranch guys get it.

My husband and I enjoy a friendly shooting match now and then ourselves. It is a lot of fun!

My Dad loved guns and would drag his kids to the gun shows, have us help him make bullets, and take us shooting. Even though, I haven't picked up his passion for guns like some of my brothers, I will always have fond memories of these times spent together.

I'll never forget the Christmas Mr. FR gave the girls a Chipmunk (little .22). They love when he says let's go shooting. It's a one shot deal you have to load each and every shot so it takes a while but they don't seem to mind.

I didn't grow up with guns very much. My brothers and dad would go shooting but I just wasn't interested. Now I have my own pistol that travels in the car with me. Mr. FR has me take it out every few months to practice with it and see how fast I can reload in case we are ever in trouble out here in the middle of nowhere. Now that's scary to think about!

Cocoa - so you're a pistol-packing mama! Some of my best memories are of target shooting with my dad.

ha ha this is funny.. Most australians have never held a gun..

after a big shooting in australia guns were outlawed about 10 years ago... I will say the upside to noone having guns is that the crime rate is much lower in Australia

love this post, I dont know anyone who shoots.. except some policemen friends and they dont even shoot rarely

Great post! I've only gone shooting twice and have never owned a gun, but I am very afraid of our rights being taken away.

Let's just say I'm happy to offer you a chance to redeem yourself on the shooting range any time :).
