This morning I had one of those experiences in life when you say, "What? Other people don't live like us?? Hmmm."
The neighbor came over and said a stray dog came and killed some of her little kittens in the night. This is how our conversation went:
"My kids are so sad, and I don't know what to do! What can I do?"
"Well, shoot it the next time it comes over."
"Shoot it! With what?"
"A gun."
"Oh.....a gun....I don't have any of those."
"Do you have even a BB gun?"
"No."
"Airsoft gun?"
"No."
"A sling shot!!??"
"No."
"Well, just do what you can, I guess."
"OK."
Then I came home and realized I'd forgotten about mentioning bow and arrows, and wondered what my boys would ever do without all their weaponry.
We have a bow and arrow target, air soft stuff, bb guns, etc. etc. etc. (Just work your way up the scale..) And the shop is full of wooden guns of various makes and models that are being created.
They would be bored stiff without them! And would invent weapons regardless of whether or not we lived in a peaceful home.
Why? Because they are boys.

That's funny. Do they not have boys? Ben was just bugging his dad to let him shoot a gun "all by myself" It won't be long before he can.
Having just returned from scout camp, I know first hand that if you give a boy a stick, depending on it's shape, he will turn it into:
a) a rifle or machine gun
b) a pistol
c) a sword
d) a spear
e) a club or bat
f) a bow
g) a firebrand to wave in the air
Hmm... sounds like schoolyards and parents better outlaw sticks. Too violent.
Who DOESN'T own a gun???!!!
Hilarious!
